Letter to the Editor:
For Park and Preserve

I am not a celebrity. I am not a millionaire. I am just another Mainer who is proud to be on the list of Americans for a Maine North Woods National Park and Preserve.

National parks are an American invention and the concept has been copied by countries around the world. As for the claim that they are playgrounds of the rich, quite the reverse is true. Millions of American working families look to our national parks as their only escape to a peaceful nature experience.

The establishment of every park in the system had its critics. But can you imagine this country without the jewel of Grand Canyon National Park? We in Maine have such a treasure in our vast and presently unspoiled North Woods. What will be the social and economic consequences if it becomes a national park? Let's find out instead of jumping to conclusions. An unhurried and thorough feasibility study is where to begin.

Some preservation efforts are so right and so necessary that they defy the delays of time and opposition. Such a project is the Maine North Woods National Park and Preserve. It must happen, and it will happen.
