| News & Updates RESTORE Contributes to First Book on Northeast Wolf Recovery A new book, hot off the presses this November, offers the insights of four thoughtful and informed observers on the question of the restoration of the wolf to northern New England and upstate New York. Edited by John Elder, THE RETURN OF THE WOLF: REFLECTIONS ON THE FUTURE OF WOLVES IN THE NORTHEAST features essays by journalist Bill McKibben, nature writer Rick Bass, scientist John Theberge, and environmental activist Kristin DeBoer; it has been published by University Press of New England as a volume in the Middlebury Bicentennial Series in Environmental Studies. Author of The End of Nature and a resident of the region, Bill McKibben encourages a skeptical look at our own motivations in this restorative effort, even as he argues that the psychological and spiritual benefits to humans would be at least as great as the ecological benefits of restoration to the region. Novelist and nature writer Rick Bass, meanwhile, brings the experiences of his home state of Montana to bear on the debate in the northeast. John Theberge draws on his years of tracking the Canadian wolf population to show that issues of restoration and return are far more complex from a biological and ecological point of view than much of the debate would suggest. And Kristin DeBoer, director of the wolf recovery program at RESTORE: The North Woods, sheds light on the politics behind Northeast wolf recovery, while also offering a personal account of her own motivations and goals in this work. Through a variety of perspectives, THE RETURN OF THE WOLF offers fresh insights into not only the ecological aspects of wolf restoration, but the social, psychological, and political as well. About the Authors: John Elder is Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College and author of Reading the Mountains of Home and Imagining the Earth. Bill McKibben has written or edited 11 books, including the best-selling The End of Nature, Hope, Human and Wild, and The Age of Missing Information. Rick Bass is author of numerous books, including the New York Times Notable Book of the Year The Sky, The Stars, The Wilderness and most recently, Colter: The True Story of the Best Dog I Ever Had.
