LURC REOPENS PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD 
on 
PLUM CREEK's
DEVELOPMENT PLAN
for Moosehead Lake

Plum Creek public comment period. The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) is inviting public comment on new, proposed amendments to Plum Creek's plan for massive development in the Moosehead Lake region in northern Maine. A few of these amendments represent improvements, but many are heading in the wrong direction.

All public comments on Plum Creek's development proposal must be received by LURC
no later than 4:00 P.M., July 11, 2008.

Background:  Plum Creek proposes to rezone 400,000 acres around Moosehead Lake, including 20,000 acres for new development zones.  This is the largest real estate development ever proposed in Maine. It would enable the development of over 2,300 house lots and residential units, two large and two smaller resorts and 6 commercial districts.  For more information go to RESTORE's PlumCreek Watch web page.

SOME KEY POINTS

Talk about what is important to you.  If you have a connection to the area, briefly mention it. Some key points to raise: 

• Even with the new LURC amendments, Plum Creek’s plan still represents a wholesale change in the wild character of the Moosehead region. Plum Creek’s plan is still the wrong kind and amount of development in the wrong place.

• The LURC-generated amendments fail to reduce the total number of development units (over 2,000) by even one house, fail to eliminate development proposed for highly sensitive areas such as Lily Bay and Indian Pond, and fail to say how lynx and other imperiled and sensitive wildlife will be protected.

• The LURC-generated amendments fail to evaluate whether the plan adequately addresses meeting demonstrated need and having no undue adverse impact on uses and resources in the region.

• The LURC-generated amendments fail to evaluate whether Plum Creek’s plan adequately addresses protection of air, cultural, archaeological, historical, forest, geological, recreational resources, water and wildlife resources.

• The LURC-generated amendments fail to address whether Plum Creek’s plan strikes a reasonable and publicly beneficial development-conservation balance.
