The Maine Woods remains the largest undeveloped forest in the eastern U.S. — a vast landscape of coniferous and hardwood ecosystems, exceptional biodiversity, and remote backcountry. The region encompasses most of New England’s remaining old-growth forests, spectacular rivers, lakes and wetlands, expansive habitat for wildlife, and places of deep cultural significance.
The next talk in RESTORE’s ongoing Speaker Series about “National Parks Past, Present, and Future” will focus on Maine. On March 26, Jym St. Pierre, RESTORE’s Maine Director, will speak about big changes in northern Maine in recent decades and the opportunity to create a grand national park and preserve. You can register for his talk here.
Jym has worked on protecting parks, forests, and wildlife in Maine for more than 40 years. He leads RESTORE’s effort to create an expanded Maine Woods National Park and Preserve, building on the success of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, established by President Obama in 2016.
