In “From the Mountains to the Sea: The Historic Restoration of the Penobscot River,” author Peter Taylor, a writer and consultant on conservation projects, has put this volume together at the behest of the Penobscot River Restoration Trust. Perhaps it was convenient to believe that nature was so profligate and recuperative as to withstand any degree of engineering and still be bountiful. But the people of the Native American Penobscot tribe knew better. The story of the Penobscot River’s restoration affirms not just those recuperative powers of nature, but the nearer possibility of a day in which all of us, engineers included, might work within that sacred circle of life. ~ Richard Adams Carey
