EU’s own scientists warn against burning wood for renewable energy

The majority of the forest biomass harvesting in the EU is degrading ecosystems and undermining climate goals, according to a report released yesterday by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. The report on biomass was commissioned by the European Commission to help inform potential revision of the EU’s renewable energy and climate legislation, acknowledging concerns that harvesting of trees and logging residues to meet renewable energy targets is degrading forests and undermining greenhouse gas reduction goals.
