Four University of Maine at Farmington students gathered Friday, Nov. 19, to stage a sit-in that blocked traffic on Main Street (Route 4) — one of Farmington’s busier thoroughfares — to protest climate change and fossil fuel emissions across the country, Maine, in town and on that specific road. The sit-in lasted for about 15 minutes before campus and town police arrived on the scene, issued a warning and then forced participants off the road. Protesters planned to conduct the sit in for an hour, from 12-1 p.m. The nonviolent sit-in ultimately raised discussion and debate between participants, bystanders and other local activists about the most impactful ways to protest and instigate change.
