In a time when 75 million people vehemently believe one thing and 80 million people believe the other, how can our country move ahead under a common idea? Almost 150 years ago Frederick Law Olmstead, the creator of iconic parks throughout our country, knew that the American myth was being fractured by sectarianism, war and industrialization, and that these forces needed to be countermanded with a sensibility towards the common good. Parks, public spaces, and natural areas were not only spaces of reprieve, they were bricks in a “broad-minded public spirit that could transcend factional politics.” He knew then what is also possible now: Parks build democracy. Public space is a commons that strengthens our social fabric, narrates a story of shared heritage, improves community health, and expands participation in civic processes. Parks are an essential infrastructure for our republic. ~ Matthew Clarke, Design Trust for Public Space
