Letter: Tribes would benefit from Maine land claims law overhaul

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • February 17, 2021

Kudos for the excellent article “Search for sovereignty” that fronted Tuesday’s paper. Staff Writer Colin Woodard’s Feb. 16 story balances Penobscot elder Donna Loring’s impressive professional life with important facts about Maine’s fraught relationship with the Indigenous people of our land. I urge our Legislature to take affirmative action on the recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act. ~ Valerie Blais, Portland
