Senate special election candidates miles apart on climate

Voters in Senate District 14 will go to the polls March 9 in a contest that features clear distinctions between the candidates. The special election for the Augusta-area seat will determine the replacement for former state Sen. Shenna Bellows, a Democrat who vacated her seat after she was elected secretary of state. Former state Rep. Craig Hickman, a Democrat, and Republican William Guerrette, a businessman who briefly served as a state legislator in the 1990s, are vying to replace Bellows. A variety of advocacy groups have lined up behind Hickman, praising his record in the legislature, including the Maine Conservation Voters Action Fund, which lauded Hickman’s stance on environmental issues and warned that Guerrette’s record doesn’t measure up.
