Letter: Pine Tree Power may not live up to promises

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • May 26, 2021

Before everyone starts jumping on the proposed Pine Tree Power Co. to replace our two current electricity providers – which I have no love for at all – the last time the Legislature got involved in the state’s power needs, they gave us deregulation. This forced Central Maine Power to divest some of its assets to a private company, which was supposed to make electricity prices more competitive. When CMP was a regulated monopoly, we never had interruptions in service and prolonged outages like we have today. Deregulation has saved us nothing, and many of the companies providing power, such as Electricity Maine, have proven to be scams whose rates are higher than the standard offer. ~ Jon Spinner, Scarborough
