Big Victories for Maine’s Environment

NATURAL RESOURCES COUNCIL OF MAINE • July 22, 2021

The recent legislative session was one of our most productive ever for Maine’s environment, including:
• $40 million for the Land for Maine’s Future program
• $50 million for improvements at Maine’s State Parks
• $50 million to accelerate energy efficiency upgrades for Maine homes
• Funding for climate resiliency planning
• A bill requiring manufacturers to help pay to recycle packaging materials
• A new program to dispose of unused medications safely and for free
• A bill to reduce plastic pollution from the release of balloons
• $25 million to improve public drinking water systems
• $22 million for municipal wastewater infrastructure to reduce pollution
• Banned residential use of neonicotinoid pesticides to protect pollinators
• Banned the sale of products containing FPAS “forever chemicals” by 2030
