How do we know if swimming at Maine beaches is safe?

A program called Maine Healthy Beaches monitors conditions at more than 60 locations around the state. This meticulously cultivated information can be found updated regularly on the Maine DEP website. The state’s healthy beaches program monitors only ocean beach water, however. It’s up to local officials to monitor freshwater swim beaches, if they choose to.
