Column: Exploring Middle Bay by kayak

TIMES RECORD • June 6, 2021

Middle Bay is located between Harpswell Neck on the east and Merepoint on the west. The southern end of Brunswick forms the northern border and the bay connects with Casco Bay on the south. Ours was a decidedly senior group. Our average age was a youthful 74. Near White Island, we encountered a busy oyster harvesting operation. Progressing south, we spotted a playful harbor seal and a handsome osprey. At Birch Island we visited the relatively new Helen and Walter Norton Preserve. On the return trip a gentle tailwind propelled us along the west side of White Island and past campers on Crow Island. Ours had been a remarkable outing. ~ Ron Chase
