Letter: Climate deniers know exactly what they’re doing

KENNEBEC JOURNAL • August 22, 2021

The Aug. 11 editorial cartoon depicts a worker in painter’s overalls labeled “World Economy,” and his pail says “Oil.”  He’s painted himself into the proverbial corner: as most of the planet burns, he stands on what’s left of the North Pole, thinking “Oops.” Good premise, but the characterization is far too benign. “Oops” is a harmless fumble, an innocent blunder. The climate alarm started ringing decades ago. All those involved in placing huge profits above all else — even at the expense of a livable environment — know exactly what they’re doing, and have for some time. “Oops” can’t begin to convey the level of greed necessary for this. ~ Ginny Stanhope, Hallowell
