Forever Chemicals Found Throughout Lower Merrymeeting Bay Watershed

FRIENDS OF MERRYMEETING BAY • October 25, 2022

Today Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) released a comprehensive report detailing their widespread PFAS sampling of surface waters in the lower Merrymeeting Bay watershed. Documented for the first time is direct evidence of continued PFAS leakage from the former Brunswick Naval Air Station (BNAS) into the lower Androscoggin River and Bay. “There is simply no excuse for continued leakage from the former BNAS” said Ed Friedman, FOMB’s Chair. “While PFAS chemicals may be nearly everywhere at relative low but still serious levels, sources are often difficult if not impossible to detect. When a point source like BNAS is identified however, remedial action must be swift and effective.”
