Extreme heat, heavy rain, lawn runoff blamed for Brunswick clam die-off

TIMES RECORD • October 4, 2022

In late July and early August, a confluence of factors, including extreme heat, heavy rainfall and the possible presence of lawn fertilizers and pesticides, contributed to the death of 4 acres of softshell clams in Brunswick, according to Dan Devereaux, the town’s coastal resource manager. Freeport and Harpswell saw similar clam deaths over the summer. He warned that the factors that likely caused this summer’s mortality event will only worsen over time.
