Scientists studying the Thwaites “Doomsday glacier” in Antarctica have been learning a lot. Within the next 10 years, Thwaites will no longer be grounded on a rock ridge, preventing the breakup of this 13,500-foot thick glacier the size of Florida. Its breakup, which will add 2 feet to sea level rise, is likely to happen fast, in years or decades rather than centuries because it largely rests on water not land. ~ Carlton Wilcox, P.E., New Gloucester
