Gov. Mills issues first vetoes from 2022 legislative session

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • April 27, 2022

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills vetoed L.D. 170, which would make it more difficult to build transmission lines that provide power on a regional basis, rather than to make the state’s system more reliable or provide service to Maine. Mills criticized L.D. 170, saying that it could impede by the state’s ability to meet its ambitious climate change goals by creating “inappropriate barriers to the development of transmission lines.” She called other portions of the bill, dealing with financing of new transmission lines, as being “constitutionally suspect.” No roll call votes were held on the transmission line bill, so its unclear whether lawmakers will be able to over ride it.
