Ticks Spreading Life-Threatening Allergy in Maine

RISE • June 20, 2022

Without proper pest control, Mainers are at risk of contracting a life-threatening protein allergy. Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), carried by the lone star tick, is spreading a newly identified allergy to red meat and other animal products to Maine. And AGS isn’t the only concern. Between 2004 and 2019, tick-borne illnesses in the United States more than doubled. According to the trade association RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment), proper pest management can minimize the threat of tick-borne illness and make it safe to spend time outdoors.
