Come September, many Mainers expect to see a steady parade of pickup trucks heading into the northern forest as hunters take part in the state’s moose hunt. That’s not always been the case, however. In fact, if you grew up in the 1950s, 1960s or 1970s, you never would have come across a moose hunter. Or, to be more precise, you wouldn’t have found a legal moose hunter. There was no hunting season for moose. That changed in 1980, and has become a Maine tradition since then.
