Medium and heavy-duty trucks account for roughly a quarter of all transportation-related emissions in the U.S. They are the second largest emitter in the transportation sector, behind passenger vehicles. While Maine has set specific benchmarks to get more electric passenger vehicles on the road to reduce carbon emissions, there are no such goals for electric medium and heavy-duty trucks. Transitioning large trucks to electric is complex. They are expensive, require larger batteries, which take longer to charge, and drivers are concerned about range.
