Have you ever looked at a breathtaking landscape and thought to yourself, “Why isn’t this a national park?” With a major increase in funding from the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the National Park Service is perhaps more prepared than ever to add new public lands to its existing roster. The NPS and the Bureau of Land Management expect to receive an additional $500 million during the next ten years to address habitat restoration and climate change resilience, and the proven impact of deforested landscapes on carbon sequestration and biodiversity protection. We have a humble suggestion for how to best spend that money: Designate some new national parks, including Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine.
