Letter: Let’s build on Maine’s excellent animal protection record

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • February 11, 2023

For the third year in a row, Maine is ranked the top state in the country by the Animal Legal Defense Fund for having the strongest animal protection laws. To continue to build on this accomplishment and progress for domestic and wild animals in our state, Mainers must voice their support for other initiatives, including:

• An Act to Ban the Hunting of Animals in an Enclosed Area: Maine’s hunting tradition is important. This is not an anti-hunting bill; it only seeks to eliminate canned hunting.

• An Act to Restrict the Daytime and Nighttime Killing of Coyotes: Coyotes are needlessly hunted year-round, day and night; this bill calls for a revision to Maine’s management of this ecologically important species.

It is up to Maine’s citizens to tell elected officials and wildlife managers to support initiatives such as these. ~ Tammy Cloutier, Kennebunk
