Despite a spate of recent storms, most of Maine is seeing less snow and ice this year

Although Mainers endured several heavy winter storms over the past few weeks, the overall season has produced less snow and ice than usual, according to the state’s River Flow Advisory Commission. Despite recent storms erasing part of the deficit, the National Weather Service described the current winter season as “mild to moderate compared to normal with below normal snowpack, coupled with well above normal temperatures across the state.” Ice has been light, too. The commission noted the Coast Guard has four icebreaker vessels based in Maine to break up ice jams, but jams have been less of an issue this year.
