Nordic Aquafarms wants to run piping underneath private intertidal land from the company’s proposed salmon facility in Belfast, which would be built west of Route 1, to connect inflow and outflow water pipes with Penobscot Bay. The Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled there is a valid conservation easement that precludes any non-residential use of the property. The company’s proposal for Belfast is one of many aquaculture projects that have recently been contemplated for sites in Maine. Some communities have welcomed the investments and expected jobs, and plans are moving ahead. However, some communities have issued moratoriums to preemptively block the proposals.
