Maine issues notice of violation to rail company over release of sediment into waters near derailment site

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • April 28, 2023

Activity related to the clean up of a derailment in northern Maine this month has caused a significant amount of sediment to be released into Maine’s waters in violation of anti-pollution laws, prompting regulators to issue a notice of violation to the rail company, the state said Friday. The Maine Forest Service and Land Use Planning Commission issued the notice to Canadian Pacific Kansas City on Thursday, and the Department of Environmental Protection sent a letter to the railroad the same day laying out the findings by the forest service and planning commission that heavy equipment used to access the derailment site for remediation led to notable sediment discharge into Maine waters, degrading Maine’s water quality and violating the Pollution Control Law.
