Column: Expect a bumper crop of McMansions in Auburn’s ag zone

SUN JOURNAL • May 21, 2023

In the early 1960s, Auburn’s city leaders, with commendable foresight, set aside some 20,000 acres, about 40% of the city’s land area, for the purpose of preserving farming, forestry and open space as well as preventing suburban sprawl. In 2023, a different generation of leaders is seeking, with less commendable lack of foresight, to replace farms with houses. Now the city appears to be heading towards making its AG Zone “agricultural” in name only, leaving most of the acreage planted with no crops but McMansions. ~ Elliott Epstein
