Baxter State Park rangers attempting to rescue four hikers on Katahdin

PORTLAND PRESS HERALD • July 25, 2025

Four hikers became stranded on Mount Katahdin’s Knife Edge Thursday night after a woman sustained an “unstable knee injury,” according to park officials. Rangers from Baxter State Park’s Chimney Pond reached the hikers Friday morning to provide food, hot liquids and dry clothes, but cloudy conditions on the mountain are obstructing a helicopter from carrying out the evacuation. Two hiking parties became stranded after dark, Baxter State Park Director Kevin Adam wrote in a press release. The other three hikers are not injured, he said. Rescuers from the Maine Forest Service are evaluating “when they may be able to fly to that altitude and rescue the injured hiker,” Adam said.
