Letter: A Lobster on Every Plate and a Moose on Every Driveway

DAILY BULLDOG • August 14, 2026

When I talk to friends I know from living in big cities about moving to Maine, it feels like I’m trying to justify my decision. They want to know, “But why Maine? There’s nothing there!” What makes Maine the special place it is, besides the people, isn’t just how beautiful the land is, or how much of it remains undeveloped. It is an awareness and appreciation of that quality that so many people seem to understand. Even if they hold divergent opinions on other issues, most Mainers I’ve met seem better clued into developments that impact the natural world around us more so than other places I’ve lived. ~ Dan Rhodes, Kingfield
