Penobscot Nation secures 11,000 acres near Katahdin

The Penobscot Nation completed on Wednesday the acquisition of 11,300 acres near Mount Katahdin. The transfer is the first phase of a vast land return known as Wáhsehtəkʷ — a term for the east branch of the Penobscot River — that will ultimately bring 30,000 acres back under tribal control. It could also lead to a new southern access route into Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
