Fact brief: Are 1 in 7 Maine homes vacant at least part of the year?

CENTRAL MAINE • September 3, 2026

Yes. In 2024, 14.4% of Maine housing units — about one in seven — were classified as vacant for seasonal, recreational or occasional use, the highest share of any state. The U.S. Census Bureau didn’t measure how many days each home sat empty.
