Donna Raymond’s description of the proposal for a consumer-owned utility to replace Central Maine Power and Versant Power is way off the mark. There are already 2,900 municipal and cooperative consumer-owned utilities serving 91 million Americans, including nine right here in Maine that serve 97 towns with cheaper and more reliable service than CMP or Versant. The five highest-rated utilities in the country are consumer-owned. Ms. Raymond chides us to not be “gullible.” “Gullible” would be believing that CMP and Versant and their foreign-owned parent companies care about anything beyond shareholder returns. ~ Mary Hobson, Topsham
