A proposal to build a new 19,100-square-foot, $6 million animal shelter on former farmland has been unanimously approved by the Planning Board. Construction of the new Kennebec Valley Humane Society headquarters at 168 Leighton Road, which would replace what officials said is their outdated facility on Pet Haven Lane off Western Avenue, could start in late summer or early fall and be ready to house homeless animals about a year after that.
